School Choice application time is here!

2155-HeaderReminder: School Choice takes place from January 8-28 (Pre-school-12th) Get those applications in if you want to nab a seat at a magnet, theme or other specialty school: http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/school-choice

From the DCSS website:
Parents in DeKalb County have the opportunity to make choices regarding their children’s public school education. The DeKalb County School District offers a variety of school choice programs to students currently enrolled in public schools, private schools, and home schools. Because there are several programs serving students in grades prekindergarten through twelve, a school choice programs catalog is available to assist in selecting a program that meets the needs of your child(ren). The programs are designed to address interests such as math, science, technology, performing arts, environmental studies, engineering, career explorations, world languages, and advanced studies.

Since the number of student placements is limited per program and grade level, all eligible students applying are not guaranteed enrollment. Students are selected to enroll in the programs using an automated random student selection process. Magnet programs provide satellite transportation services as approved each school year. Students enrolled in all other school choice programs who reside outside of the program’s home attendance zones do not receive transportation services.

ADDENDUM: It has come to our attention that the deadline to submit School Choice Open Enrollment is January 28, 2014 and ITBS Test scores must be included in the online enrollment. But according to Dekalb County, “2013-2014 ITBS scores will be reviewed and posted February 2014″ AFTER the application deadline has passed.

How are parents supposed to submit an online application when the updated ITBS scores are not yet made available? Can anyone share insight?

My friends 8th grader needed to take the ITBS (not offered in 8th grade) in order to apply for the Chamblee Magnet. She checked on the website this fall to see when it was and realized she had missed it by one day. There was absolutely no notification as to the 8th grade testing date for those applying for the magnet program. She would have had to go to the magnet website and checked it back in the fall.

Tucker Middle students haven’t gotten their ITBS scores back yet.

How are parents suppose to apply for a gifted school if we don’t have the most recent scores?

Not sure. I have a call in to Mary Brown at the school choice office. Her recording says she is experiencing high call volume-probably because of this issue. If anyone gets an answer on this, please share here.

  5. A mom says:

I just spoke with Mary Brown and she said the fall 2013 scores will be uploaded to the system this month, but she didn’t know when. She said school choice lotteries can’t be held until the scores are in the system. She said to keep checking. She also said if you have a hard copy of the score report, you can bring it to the computer lab to be manually entered.

  6. A mom says:

I checked with my child’s elementary school and was told the county has not released the scores to the school. So, Dekalb County School System has made it impossible to apply to any program requiring ITBS scores. Has anyone been able to get their hands on ITBS test scores?

  7. DHMS mom says:

I didnt get the score yet but the paper we received at the test says the scores would be mailed in January 31st, looks like they are behind on their deadlines.
