Eugene P. Walker, Will You Please Go Now

The time has come.
The time has come.
The time is now.
Just go.
We don’t care how.
You can go by foot.
You can go by cow.
Eugene P. Walker
will you please go now!
You can go on skates.
You can go on skis.
You can go in a hat.
Please go.
We don’t care.
You can go
By bike.
You can go
On a Zike-Bike
If you like.
If you like
You can go
In an old blue shoe.
Just go, go, GO!
Please do, do, do, DO!
Eugene P. Walker
We don’t care how.
Eugene P. Walker
Will you please
You can go
on stilts.
You can go by fish.
You can go in a Crunk-Car
If you wish.
If you wish
You may go
By lion’s tail.
Or stamp yourself
And go by mail.
Eugene P. Walker
Don’t you know
The time has come
To go, go, GO!
Make like a bee!
Please Eugene P.!
You might like going in a Zumble-Zee.
You can go by balloon
Or broomstick.
You can go by
. . . or jet.
We don’t care
how you go.
Just get!

With sincere apologies to the late Art Buchwald and his good friend, the late Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel).

“My good friend, Dr. Seuss, wrote a book a few years ago titled Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! He sent me a copy the other day and crossed out ‘Marvin K. Mooney’ and replaced it with ‘Richard M. Nixon.’ It sounded like fun so I asked him if I could reprint it. Please read it aloud.”

“The Parties agree to work cooperatively to quickly prepare a mutually approved joint public statement that is brief and non-disparaging…”

    Actions speak louder than words.

  2. Where is the obituary? Remember the “rumors” from several months ago? It was being predicted that she would be out of here by Jan. 2013. How is it possible for the rumors of her leaving to have accurately predicted a family emergency? Something is not right here.

Also, she has used this excuse before. Her resume to APS states something about mother’s illness being the reason she left a prior job.

Not saying that it is not legitimate, but I’ve had family illnesses and deaths and have never used that as a reason for my resignation from a job. She has now done that twice! I can’t think of anything that would make me quit a job with the pay and perks and low accountability that this one offered…. unless this whole exit drama was a part of the plan from the very beginning. Then I would have to stick to the script in order to collect the big payout.

Now, if I could just find someone to pay for my PhD, my vehicle, a driver, other expenses, my attorney, my cell phone and my home Internet service … oh yeah, that’s right… the taxpayers will do that, too! Right??

  3. bettyandveronica1 says:

when do they announce the next buffoon??? Bets on March or Thurmond? I say March.

  4. Concernedmom30329 says:

  5. Not another dime to SACS, Elghart forced Atkinson on DCSD and SACS should pay DCSD back for his awful recommendation. SACS has got to go!

Everyone knows the interim will be Thurmond cause Eugene Walker says so! No votes needed, our resident Duke grad already has the votes. The last election made sure of that. With Tyson running things again, and folks she is, she has moved back to the office adjacent to whomever is the interim will be, I ask the question again. WHY IS TYSON STILL ON THE PAYROLL!!!! The BOE asked her to cut staff and instead she went 49 million over budget over two years so her sorority gals, her friends and family are still reaping huge checks and benefits from the taxpayers. Now she is back to assist the interim and I am sure to make sure folks like Beasley, Ramsey, March, Berry, herself and the rest are kept on the payroll. Folks most of the Clew Crew are still employed by DCSD. How can the stakeholders expect change when the folks who are responsible for the failure that DCSD has become are still around!!!!

DCSD mired in the corrupt muck of mediocrity for over 10 years! Nothing is changing folks Eugene Walker is in control of everyone, even our DA. So no need to worry the status quo remains and our kids are the ones who will pay the price. UGH!

GETtheCELLoutATL at February 8, 2013 at 11:21 AM – “Where is the obituary?”

Ty’s latest article says that DCS released a statement that said that Atkinson’s father passed away on January 23.

We also know his name was Jack Doyle Howell, Sr because that is on page v of her Ed.D. thesis, available online here:
    Click on the DIS2.PDF link.

Despite trying legacy dot com and several other sources, I have not been able to find an obituary or other death record. I really wish someone could find it so that we could eliminate the “where is the obituary” distractions.

  7. PI says:

Instead of looking for an obituary, has anyone tried calling the guy or looking for a digital paper trail?

  8. PI says:

Well, I should clarify and say digital presence, like Facebook, Disquss, Google, or try the online white pages and Spokeo.

  9. psdad says:

From the Separation Agreement… “The BOARD will indemnify, hold harmless and undertake to defend DR. ATKINSON from any civil action brought or maintained against DR. ATKINSON where such action arises out of the lawful performance of DR. ATKINSON’s duties for the BOARD under the Employment Agreement; whether such action is based on negligence, violation of contract rights, or violation of civil, constitutional, common law, or other statutory rights, whether state or federal…”

The attorney that signed off on this language needs to be fired. How can you indemnify and commit to defend someone that has violated civil, constitutional, or common law! Worse yet how can a violation of civil, constitutional, or common law arise out of the lawful performance of ones duties as the superintendent of a school system.

By agreeing to this contract, the school board has set aside its fiduciary responsibility to act in the interest of their constituents first. What does Dr. A have on these people?

  10. PI says:

Well, she didn’t perform lawfully. It shouldn’t apply.

  11. Lynn says:

For a little levity, I would encourage y’all to visit Dunwoody Talk’s re-written speech for Michael Thurmond to deliver to Dekalb (was originally for Senate race)….It made me chuckle and I needed that right now!

  12. DeKalb Inside Out says:

The Walker 7 just want Dr Atkinson out. She can have whatever she wants as long as she gets out.

  13. LOVE the ‘updated’ speech for Thurmond by Dunwoody Talk!! How appropriate his original Senate concession speech was – it fits perfectly for DeKalb – with very few tweaks!

  14. Spirit Ledge says:

I’m sure this comment will be deleted because it does not support the mission of this blog – that being to criticize and tear down DCSS because white supremists think it is being run by black supremists who are corrupt and crooked. First who do you think the black people learned such acts from? The answer would be corrupt white people who institutionalized slavery and all of the corruption relative to selling and trading human beings for power and capital gain. Second since everyone on this blog has the answer why not run for office or apply for a job and come up with some solutions as opposed to the constant criticism, racial charged commentary this blog displays. It’s so negative and its not helping to bring unity and/or solutions to the school system. Where is the positivity or value in this blog? Do something more than hide behind a computer typing a bunch of negative criticism. How about being part of initiating a solution than perpetuating the problem?

  15. Oh for God’s sake, Spirit Ledge. First, pick one name and stick with it — per DSW blog rules — or we will take down your post. It is almost 3 PM. We will give you about an hour to make that change. Like we said to AE and others — feel free to start your own “positive” blog about Dekalb! We have encouraged the school system itself to do so for years now! Your comments have been so positive — NOT! We can’t wait to see what you would do in your own space.

  16. Concerned Citizen says:

What can we do to keep Thurmond out? He reports directly to Walker. I cannot believe he was allowed to “interview” for the position. That is totally wrong. Why do the citizens of DeKalb continue to take these abuses? Why did anyone with a brain vote for Melvin Johnson. This man hates teachers and chidren.

  17. Spirit Ledge says:

Not sure what you’re talking about with regard to one name. I’ve read this blog for a while and this is the first post. Just as you do about the subject matter here you’re making inaccurate assumptions. Take it down if you must. I completely expected such unfairness.

  18. Janet Rohrer says:

No Name: Please take Kendra March with you Dr. Atkinson.

  19. plusone says:

Everyone’s view has some level of validity. Where is the employee outrage? Where are the marching parents. I WANT to do something but who has ever heard of a one woman protest. Let’s show the state, walker, and palace people that we are fed up to the waaaaazoo. Let’s do something other than attack each other. Let’s get interviewed by Good Morning America. Let’s fight for our babies, even if yours are blessed enough to be in private school. Let’s fight for. Our teachers, custodians, paraeducators, librarians, etc….who bring home less in 2013 than they earned in 2008. Get mad….somebody please organize something…..

  20. We can track IP addresses and we can see that there are at least two different IDs coming from yours, “Spirit”. Perhaps you have two or more bloggers at your computer? One being an “insider”? At any rate – we do have a rule – one screen name per blogger please. If you have two or more different human bloggers at one IP, then we apologize.

FWIW, The Get Schooled Blog also tracks and compares IP addresses and IDs.

Word to the Wise: The school system can also track IP addresses like this – so please do not blog at work. That’s also why we encourage people with real accusations and possible fraud and corruption information to follow our links found at the Whistleblower page under the Resources tab to report these things directly to the powers that be. Do not leave accusations of corruption as a blog comment.

  21. no name says:

Spirit Ledge at February 8, 2013 at 2:40 PM: “Do something more than hide behind a computer typing a bunch of negative criticism.”

Spirit, many of us actually spend a lot of time in actual DCS schools, where we see just how badly black and latino children are being screwed over by the criminals who run DCS.

You also said “The answer would be corrupt white people who institutionalized slavery and all of the corruption relative to selling and trading human beings for power and capital gain.”

How does the experience of white immigrants that came into the country via Ellis Island fit into your narrative? Are descendants of the Catholic Irish immigrants from the 1850s supposed to suffer today because some white anglo-saxon protestants happened to own slaves back then?

  22. Mom of 3 says:

Spirit Ledge- I appreciate you opinion. Just curious- are you happy with Dekalb County Schools right now? I would love to see your ray of sunshine. There is a lot to be upset with right now. The race card has expired. If you have a positive spin on all of this, please share.

  23. DCSD FOR DUMMIES says:

    Spirit Ledge,

Shut up! Just something negative was learned, doesn’t mean that the BOE’s actions are justifiable. What about the incompetence? You’re either misinformed, an insider, or just an idiot.

  24. curious says:

I hate the racial subtext in our discussion, whether the racism is actual or simply perceived. No doubt that when the majority of the board and the superintendent were white, significant “friends and family” benefits were awarded. That was wrong then, as it is wrong now. But at that time,, student achievment was high — DeKalb County had one of the best school systems in the state — and money wasn’t a problem. Now student achievement has reached an abysmal low and we are in dire financial circumstances. I believe this is the reason things have come to a head now, when it seems no one was asking questions before.

  25. Thanks. You are correct. Our apologies. We have learned something, though, that we would not have known otherwise. So — not a total loss.

  26. DeKalb Inside Out says:

Cunningham, Woods and Walker are beloved in their districts. A majority of the DeKalb citizens are very happy with Crawford Lewis, Ramon Tyson, Cheryl Atkinson and shortly Michael Thurmond.

The calls for change are from a vocal minority. I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s reality.

For instance, Don McChesney usually fell on “your” (DSW Supporters) side of issues. He was replaced by someone who
    * voted yes for Edler to the chair
    * will vote yes for Atkinson’s severance package
    * will vote yes for Michale Thurmond as superintendent

These are demonstrably the things that a majority of DeKalb residents want.

  27. H-MAN says:

Thumond was just seen getting his Dekalb County Schools name badge. On board by the board next week.

  28. PI says:

WSB just reported that Michael Thurmond has been appointed interim. How much further south can this situation go?

  29. bettyandveronica1 says:

Nothing like the Friday night DeKalb County schools news DUMP. Look what they pooped out now. Guess who’s coming to the board? Roy Barnes is so excited and so is Gene!

  30. disgusted says:

There are board members on here giving the thumbs down. COMICAL! I am MORE than disgusted. I’m getting my resume together to submit to other counties.

  31. queenb4real says:

Sarah Copelin-Wood is NOT beloved in this district. The problem in this district is actually worse than that – the problem is parental apathy. The sad truth is that Sarah’s district has some of the worst performing schools and the most apathetic parents I’ve ever encountered. I’ve met parent(s) of elementary school age children who don’t even know their child’s teacher’s name – never met him/her. I cannot even fathom how that’s even possible, but it’s true. When I served on the PTA and local school council at my childrens’ schools, we had the same parents participate time and time again. At a 900+ elementary school maybe 20 parents who show up for a PTA meeting. Sarah would show up sometimes (for what reason we’ve never understood) and want the PTA to use funds to buy her a chicken platter from Publix. We, of course, refused. I don’t know the answer. All I can do is work my butt off whether by recall or the next election (GOD FORBID) to get rid of Sarah. I personally want her GONE. She is uneducated, inarticulate and functionally illiterate (in my opinion). It saddens me that in 2013 we are still so divided by race that this woman sits on a Board of Education. It’s really tragic. I hope and pray that the people in Cunningham’s district wake up and rid us of him. This idiot actually spoke at Destiny Academy’s graduation ceremonies and stated that he was returning to Fort Valley State University to complete is bachelor’s degree. That statement itself exposes his stupidity. Towers High School. Enough said. As for Eugene Walker, I think I despise the man if for no other reason than the shell-game he’s playing with the education of so many children all because he still has a chip on his shoulder from events 40+ years ago. The children are collateral damage in his personal race war. This is truly sad.

  32. Terry says:

Thanks everyone for the links. Sorry to get back so late to let you know I got the message. I HAD signed the petition that the student started…. I have JUST signed the petition to get rid of the board. Thank you, thank you, thank you. HOWEVER… now I am so sick of this county!! They have pushed that (*******) thurmand into a place he neither deserves NOR is qualified for!! Typical dcss!! I hope….. I REALLY hope the state BOE kicks the whole bunch of county board members out on their….little county seats. The CHILDREN deserve better than this! Where are our leaders?

  33. Breaking News from the Patch —

The DeKalb County Board of Education voted Friday 7-2 to appoint former Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond to serve as interim superintendent. He will be the temporary replacement of Cheryl Atkinson, who has resigned after 16 months on the job.

The board also voted 5-4 to approve Dr. Atkinson’s separation agreement which gives her a six-figure payout.

“We are delighted Mr. Thurmond has agreed to serve as our interim superintendent,” said Board Chairman Eugene Walker in a statement. “Our school district is facing significant challenges, and we need a leader with a strong record of making fundamental changes in large, complex organizations.

  34. Just in from the AJC:
DeKalb school system gets a new, interim, superintendent

Cheryl Atkinson is out and former Georgia labor commissioner Michael Thurmond is in as leader of the DeKalb County School District, the third largest in the state.

The school board voted 5-4 Friday afternoon to approve a separation agreement with Atkinson, and then 7-2 to approve an employment agreement with Michael Thurmond, a former Georgia labor commissioner and lawmaker. The terms of Thurmond’s agreement as interim superintendent were not immediately available.

  35. @curious: Also, today we have a massively bloated central office full of ‘coordinators’ and ‘leaders’ and other kinds of highly compensated staff to look over teachers’ shoulders. In order to pay for this bloated staff, those same teachers have had to take pay cuts, benefit cuts and increases to the size of their classes. Teachers have NEVER had to bend over in the history of DeKalb as they do now. We are losing the best ones right and left – and the test scores show the results.

  36. DeKalb Observer says:

So the separation agreement was obviously put together without half the board having any input, since 5 of them originally voted against it. And now Nancy will broadcast that Thurmond’s arrival is the result of another backroom deal. And SACS will have a sinking spell, that Nancy’s not being cooperative! Because that, after all, is the school system’s mission! Forget that Eugene Walker pretty much invited his buddy in and handed him a job – ignoring any appropriate search process and procedure. This is outrageous and what is more outrageous, is that no one with any authority cares to do anything about it.

  37. bettyandveronica1 says:

Holy Crap! Thurmond gets 275K for one year….how much$$ will we spend for the three people until June? Tyson, Atkinson and now him? Maybe they can move some more shells around to pay for it. I am done, Anyone know anything about picketing the Central office. For instance, can we protest in the parking lot or does it just have to be outside the gate and on the street? MACE can you tell us please your experience with protesting DeKalb?

  38. Retired DeKalb teacher says:

I guess Spirit did not study history in school, it was his black brothers in Africa selling THEIR slaves. So blacks owned slaves before they arrived in America!! Are you blind to all the wrong doings with monies needed for the schoolhouse? Guess you don’t have children in school or you would be concerned.

  39. Refugee from DCSS says:

I threw up in my mouth a little bit at the press conference on WSB. SCW with her vapid (closed mouth to hide her lack of teeh?) grin, nodding brainlessly along with Thurmond while he spewed the same BS we have gotten from DCSS for years. Good for Jester for not being on camera.

I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.
