Congratulations, Nancy Jester!

As expected, Nancy Jester won the run-off for the DeKalb County Commission, District 1. Only 7% of the registered voters voted. But, we take that to mean a vote of confidence in Nancy Jester — that she would win and that she will do a stellar job as our county commissioner.

DeKalb School Watch will continue to follow the actions of the DeKalb County Commission, as well as the DeKalb County Board of Education. As we said before, those two governance structures have never (to our 30+ year knowledge) worked cooperatively and collaboratively with each other. Yet each entity has a significant effect upon the other. Together, their actions — or inaction — affect the economic well-being and tax base of DeKalb County. Because almost 70% of our local tax dollars go to public education in DeKalb County (not including SPLOST, state taxes and federal taxes that also go to public education in DeKalb County) it is in the best interests of education to follow the DeKalb County Commission, as well as the DeKalb County Board of Education.

Congratulations, Nancy! Let us know how we can help!

Congrats to Nancy! Can she take office immediately?

  2. Insider says:

She should be able to. She ran to fill an unexpired term, not to take office at the start of a new term.

  3. concerned citizen says:

Sincere congratulations to an outstanding young woman who will do great things, always!

  4. I am so glad Nancy won. I was out of town when the runoff was announced and did not get back in time to vote. All I could do was remind my friends to do so. I am excited to know we now have such a capable representative.

And in actual Dekalb County School System news, Lithonia Middle School custodian Rodney Winston was arrested Tuesday for molesting two Lithonia Middle School students:

Channel-2 is reporting that female students made similar complaints against Lithonia Middle School custodian Rodney Winston in 2011 and 2013 for inappropriate behavior at the school. DCSS suspended Winston at the time but he was not criminally charged.

Channel-2 also found a mugshot from a 2003 arrest when Winston was charged with sexual battery and burglary in DeKalb County:
